"GLADify" your Classroom Setup in 3 Simple Steps!
Do you aspire to arrange your classroom the GLAD way? Let's dissect the Be GLAD classroom setup process into three simple steps!
Step | Description |
---|---|
Step 1: Team Formation Organize desks into teams of 3-4
| Maximize student collaboration by arranging desks into teams of 3-4 students. When feasible, target groups of 4 students per team, enabling the teacher to select a student from each team for small group sessions later in the unit.
This configuration leaves 3 students behind, an optimal number for Team Tasks. Whenever possible, arrange desks to facilitate face-to-face interaction among students, laying the groundwork for Team Tasks and peer-to-peer discussions during units. |
Step 2: Create a Learning Lab
| Termed the "Learning Lab" in GLAD, this designated area, commonly known as the carpet space, serves as the hub for direct instruction.
Here, instructional strategies such as the Graphic Organizer, Pictorial Input Chart, and Cooperative Strip Paragraph come to life. The intentional layout promotes closeness to the presented information, reducing distractions and amplifying engagement.
Within this space, students reap the benefits of neurological imprinting, alongside the utilization of picture file cards and other visuals. Finding ways to bring students in closer proximity to the instructional content is instrumental in fostering student success. |
Step 3: Scout and Scorekeeper Spaces
| During instruction you can enlist the help of scouts to identify students meeting the three personal standards. Dedicate 2-3 spaces within the Learning Lab area specifically for scouts, potentially incorporating special chairs or stools for consistency.
You can establish a dedicated space for the scorekeeper in close proximity to Team Points, providing them with a vantage point to observe all teams and effectively manage the scoring process. |
Try it out!
These 3 steps collectively contribute to the creation of an inclusive and collaborative classroom environment, laying the foundation for interactive instruction, engagement, and teamwork throughout all units of study.
