There is nothing quite like the energy of a brand new school year. Your classroom is fresh. Your students are curious. And you have a beautiful window of time to build community before the routines settle in. The best part? You can build that community while building language from day one! GLAD strategies make this easy because they invite every learner in no matter their language level.

Here are three of our favorite back to school GLAD strategies. Each one helps students feel seen. Each one gets them talking, writing, and connecting right away. Let's dive in!

3 Back to School GLAD Strategies to Start the Year Strong

Summer arrives with something every educator deserves: space. Space to breathe, to rest, and—when you’re ready—to think. Not the intense, data-heavy reflection that feels like another task on a checklist, but the kind of reflection that honors the year you just lived and helps you step into the next one with clarity. At Be GLAD, we believe reflection isn’t about perfection or correction. It’s about recognizing growth, celebrating what worked, and thoughtfully shaping what comes next.

June doesn’t have to be the month where learning quietly fades out. In fact, it can be one of the most exciting parts of the year. By now, students have seen strategies modeled, practiced routines, built language, engaged in rich content, and watched learning come alive through visuals, poetry, Big Books, or graphic organizers. Now it’s time for them to use those tools independently.

Instead of creating “end-of-year busy work,” June can become a time for extended learning projects—where students get the chance to dig deeper, research topics that interest them, and choose meaningful ways to show what they know.

Meaningful Ways to Close the Year Without Just Filling Time

If you’ve ever watched a student confidently give an answer but weren’t quite sure they understood how they got there, you’re not alone. Too often in classrooms, we celebrate the right answer instead of celebrating the thinking that led there.
That’s where metacognition comes in — helping students think about their thinking.

At Be GLAD, we believe learning should be visible, intentional, and meaningful. Metacognition does exactly that. When students understand the process of how they arrived at an answer, they become stronger, more independent, and more confident learners.
