Boosting PBL Success with GLAD Strategies!
Dive into 3 effective strategies designed to engage students in real-world problem-solving through Project-Based Learning (PBL).
Are you using Project-based Learning in your classroom? Here are 3 GLAD strategies that can support students as they research, design, and develop solutions to real-world challenges.
Observation Charts: Observation Charts are a great way to get students curious about a real-world problem that needs a solution. Be selective in the picture file cards you use- choose pictures that show problems around the world. These photos will spark language and interest or inspiration for students. As students to a gallery walk with their team, they will work together to make observations, questions, and predictions to the pictures that resonate most with them. Observation Charts are a wonderful way to kick off a unit leading into project-based learning.
Inquiry Charts: Once students have determined a topic, or you have assigned a topic to them, try utilizing the Inquiry Chart Strategy. This strategy gets students ready for the scientific process and thinking. You start off with the left side of the chart, where students will list what they think they know about the topic. Listed here will be students’ hypotheses. On the right side of the chart, students will list their questions. This activity can be done whole class, as a team, and then as an individual, for individual research projects.
Exploration Report: The Exploration Report can be used with pictures related to a topic, or realia related to a topic. At the top of the Exploration Report, list out the topic or the “real world problem” students will be researching. Students will then use the pictures or realia to go through 3 steps- Observing, Questioning, and Predicting. Watch the video below for a demonstration of the Exploration Chart!
Try it out!
These strategies are a great way to get students thinking and exploring problems in the real world. The next time you teach a PBL unit, try integrating the Observation Charts, Inquiry Chart, and Exploration Report to enhance the learning experience for your students.
