Sentence Patterning Chart (SPC) Trade Game

One of our favorite strategies is the Sentence Patterning Chart (SPC) or also known as the Farmer-in-the-Dell. It's an incredible way to teach academic syntax, grammar, and learn the natural rhythm of language in a fun way.

This is an extension activity after the chart is built and the Read Game has been done. It's called the 'Trade Game'

SPC Trade Game

As the video shows, the Trade Game relies heavily on the Sentence Patterning Chart on our language functional environment. Students read, speak, and listen to the language on the chart (core language arts standards).

Students have an incomplete set of cards for the Trade Game.

Rules:

1. Everyone must participate.

2. Everyone reads right side up in an appropriate reading style.

3. The sentence must be in the correct syntax for our focus.

4. Trade extra parts of speech for missing/needed parts of speech using the correct academic term for it (e.g. "We'll trade our noun for your verb.")

We encourage the use of ASL or gestures for each part of speech to allow preproduction students the opportunity to participate.

This game should be repeated multiple times with different missing parts of speech and extra parts of speech that they'll have to trade with each other. Students have fun while getting an ear for the target language.

If they can learn Pokemon names by trading cards, they can learn terms for parts of speech by trading too.
